Witt and Genes Score 14 Each In Loss To Charleston

West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Basketball dropped a conference road game to the Golden Eagles of Charleston on Wednesday night 71-51. The Golden Eagles shooting 46.2% from the field would be too much for the Bobcats.

Emma Witt got the Bobcats in the scoring column with a three to tie it early. The two teams went toe-to-toe throughout the remainder of the opening quarter, exchanging the lead ten times. Wesleyan took a 21-17 lead into the 2nd quarter.

Charleston came out hot between quarters, scoring 11 points in under three minutes, retaking the lead. A Daveona Hatchell three tied the game back up but the Golden Eagles would finish the closing minutes of the first half strong, going into the break leading the Bobcats 39-34.

UC came out firing in the 2nd half, expanding their lead to as much as 16. A pair of back-to-back three-pointers by Shelby Genes put the Bobcats back within 10, but that is as close as they would get for the remainder of the game.

The Bobcats shot 1-12 from the field in the closing quarter, allowing the Golden Eagles to cruise to victory. Charleston's Trinity Palacio led all scorers with 19, shooting 7-13 from the field.

Emma Witt and Shelby Genes led the Bobcats in scoring with 14 each with Daveona Hatchell chipping in nine points. Witt grabbed eight rebounds, four of those being offensive. Courtney Wilfong dished out a game-high four assists in the loss.

Bobcats return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Rockefeller Center against West Virginia State.
