Two West Virginia University School of Nursing Keyser Campus students have been selected as WV Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Rural Community Health Scholars.
Emily Golden and Jessica Maynard, both juniors in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, were selected for the two-year program, which supports health professions students interested in supplementing their education through experiences in rural and urban underserved communities, including didactic, clinical and community activities.
"Working with AHEC is an honor that will benefit me throughout my career and for the rest of my life,” Maynard said. “I am looking forward to learning about, and practicing, different ways that I can benefit my rural community in practice.”
Golden said it is an honor to be one of the first students from Potomac State College to be selected for this program.
“It gives me a sense of hope knowing that there are other people who care about destigmatizing certain health conditions/diseases,” Golden said. “I look forward to understanding more about drug addiction and helping other people understand that it is a disease and not just solely a choice."
Dr. April Shapiro, Keyser Campus Chair, expressed her excitement for Golden and Maynard, especially as the first WV AHEC Rural Community Scholars in the nursing program on the Keyser Campus.
“The program is a wonderful opportunity for them to make a difference in the rural health of West Virginians,” Shapiro said. “I look forward to learning about their projects and experiences as they collaborate with students and professionals from other healthcare disciplines. It is such an honor, and I know they will represent nursing well!"
