Bluefield State University Volleyball took down Winston-Salem State University 3-2 at Ned Shott Gymnasium on Wednesday.
After dropping the first two sets (25-21, 25-21), the Big Blue opened set three with back-to-back kills from BriShaela McHaney and Paige Jutte to take the early lead. Another kill by McHaney late in the set sparked a five-point run for BSU to have the 23-16 advantage. WSSU would score one of their own to stop the run, but after an error by WSSU and a final point kill from Allyson Martin, the Big Blue would take their first set of the night 25-17.
WSSU took the 4-1 lead early in set four, but the Big Blue would score seven consecutive points to take the 8-5 lead. Two kills from Martin, followed by a kill from Jutte and a miscue from WSSU would give the Big Blue the 22-13 advantage. WSSU would score one before the Big Blue would score the next three to take the set 25-14 and force the deciding set.
WSSU would score the first four points of set five, but the Big Blue would go on an 8-0 scoring run to take the 8-4 lead. This run included two ace serves from Jordan Duncan, three kills from Martin, one kill from Jutte and two WSSU miscues. WSSU would battle back to pull within one late in the set (14-13), but a kill by McHaney would secure the set win 15-13.
